14 Years Since the Your Company Works Story Began
This month marks 14 years since the Your Company Works story began.
It would be easy to describe that as 14 straightforward years in business, but the real journey has been much more human than that.
There have been busy periods, proud moments, relationships that have lasted for years, a period of retirement and, eventually, the decision to return to work that still meant a great deal to Paula.
So this anniversary is not simply about counting years.
It is about recognising the people, experiences and sense of purpose that have shaped Your Company Works since 2012.
Where the story began
Before creating Your Company Works, Paula Santomauro had already built extensive experience in Health & Safety, Fire Safety, facilities and workplace management.
In 2012, she decided to use that experience to create a different kind of Health & Safety consultancy.
The aim was not to overwhelm businesses with jargon, long reports or lists of everything they were doing wrong.
It was to listen, understand how the business genuinely operated and find practical solutions that its people could realistically use.
That approach still sits at the centre of Your Company Works today.
Health & Safety that works in the real world
Businesses need to protect their people and meet their responsibilities, but they also need to continue operating.
Your Company Works has always recognised both sides of that reality.
A policy is only useful if people understand it.
A risk assessment only has value if the agreed actions are completed.
Advice must fit the actual workplace, its people and the way the business operates.
That is why Your Company Works support can look different for different clients. One business may need a specific assessment or short project. Another may need ongoing guidance, implementation support or a trusted Competent Person alongside its team.
The purpose is not to create unnecessary work.
It is to help the client understand what matters, decide what needs to happen and feel supported while putting it into place.
A journey shaped by people
No business journey is created by one person alone.
Over the years, Paula has worked with clients, employees, professional contacts, referral partners and people who have shared different parts of the YCW journey.
Dee has worked alongside Paula for much of that story. She describes Paula as having taken her under her wing, helping her develop her experience and further ignite her passion for Health & Safety.
Kathryne has also been among the people who have supported Your Company Works during its journey.
Those relationships matter because they reflect something central to YCW: knowledge should be shared, people should feel supported and good Health & Safety is built through conversation and cooperation.
The same is true of the clients and contacts who have trusted Paula, recommended her and returned when they needed further help.
They are all part of this anniversary too.

The pause
In 2022, Paula retired and Your Company Works paused.
Stepping away created a significant change in her life. It also gave Paula the opportunity to recognise exactly what she missed.
She missed meeting people.
She missed understanding their concerns.
She missed working through problems and finding practical answers.
Most of all, she missed the positive feeling that came from helping somebody move from uncertainty to greater confidence.
It became clear that Your Company Works had never been only a business to Paula. It provided connection, stimulation and a real sense of purpose.
A new chapter
In 2025, Paula brought Your Company Works back.
The decision was not about trying to recreate the past exactly as it had been. Life had changed, Paula had changed and the business could change too.
It was about returning to work she valued and using her experience to help businesses and the people behind them.

That is what makes this anniversary particularly meaningful.
The Your Company Works journey has not been a perfectly straight line, but its underlying purpose has remained consistent:
to help people understand Health & Safety, make sensible decisions and put practical arrangements in place without feeling overwhelmed.

Every business is different.
Listening must come before advising.
Good Health & Safety should support the organisation rather than unnecessarily prevent it from operating.
Paperwork should reflect what genuinely happens in the workplace.
People are more likely to follow arrangements when they understand why they matter.
Actions need owners, timescales and follow-up.
And asking for advice should never leave somebody feeling embarrassed about what they do not know.
Health & Safety can be serious without being frightening.
It can be professional without being impersonal.
And it can be thorough without becoming unnecessarily complicated.
